Nearly everyone can relate to feeling stubborn from time to time. But sometimes, stubbornness can lead to issues in relationships and in life, in general. For most people, there comes the point where they’ll soften up and become flexible. But for those who have a stubborn nature, flexibility is at a premium. As it turns out, certain Enneagram types are actually more prone to being stubborn. But which Enneagram type is the most stubborn?

Are you stubborn?

One of the most common traits of stubbornness is a willingness to stick to a decision, even if the original thinking behind it has changed and new information shows it may be wrong. The best way to identify whether you are stuck in stubbornness is to look at your own personal relationship with change.

Are you someone who tends to take a stand on issues and ideas? Do you hold on to your beliefs, appreciating the value of consistency, even when faced with new evidence that suggests you might be wrong? If so, then you are likely one of the Enneagram types that I have identified as stubborn personalities.

But how do you know if you are naturally stubborn? Everyone gets stuck in their ways, makes assumptions, and has trouble admitting when they are wrong. This can lead to inflexibility and blind spots.

What is the Enneagram?

The Enneagram is a personality typing system that classifies people as one of nine different personality types. This system has gained popularity and recognition in the last few years, thanks in no small part to the fact that it can be used to better understand ourselves or other people in our lives. The Enneagram suggests that some people are more prone to certain traits than others. For instance, some enneagram types may be more stubborn than others.

Which Enneagram Types Are the Most Stubborn?

The Enneagram is a nine-pointed model that depicts nine different personality types. The model has helped many people understand themselves better, their personality traits such as their behaviors, likes, and dislikes, and can help find the ideal career. The Enneagram can also highlight which personality types are known to be the most stubborn. So, let’s take a look at that.

Enneagram Type 9 – The Peacemaker

The Enneagram type 9 is known as the Peacemaker as this is the type that wants to be the mediator and be in calm settings. You would think that Type 9s are the easiest to get along with, but the fact is that they are highly stubborn. According to Integrative 9, the 9s are quite hard-headed because they don’t like the idea of leaving their comfort zone. They also do not want to communicate their needs and thoughts because they think they will only weigh others down. Their lack of communication is also what makes them appear to be stubborn.

However, there is one thing you would be surprised to know about the Peacemaker. Their stubbornness increases their chances of success. You know that once you have your mindset on something, you will do anything to go after it.

Enneagram Type 8 – The Challenger

You may know that the Challenger or Type 8 is the most assertive and aggressive type in the Enneagram. They are pretty set their ways which should not come as a surprise to you at all. According to Truity by Molly Owens, this type is the most stubborn Enneagram type because they are assertive and headstrong, but they will go after what they want without anything stopping them at all. This type is serious about controlling their environment and anything else that gets in their way.

Additionally, those with this type are bold and independent and are also stubborn about hiding their vulnerable side. However, that can cause them more harm than good.

Enneagram Type 6 – The Loyal Cynic

If you know about the traits of the Enneagram Type 6, them having the stubborn streak should not come as a surprise at all. The Loyola Cynic is the type that will refuse to trust anyone or anything that threatens their safety until they find a reason to do so. However, type 6 is not the type that would leave their comfort zone and have very stern expectations of others.

According to Susan Storm of Psychology Junky, being unreliable is something that infuriates this type.  Type 6 is loyal and hardworking and expects others to be the same. There is no patience for those who are wishy-washy and unpredictable.

The Takeaway

You can see how some stubbornness can serve you in the end because it can help you achieve your goals. This is because stubbornness can increase tenacity and determination. However, at the same time, stubbornness can cause you to lose friends and keep you stuck in unpleasant situations because of the fear of leaving your comfort zone. That is why Type 8, 9, and 6 are known to have the most prominent stubborn streaks of the Enneagram.
